With over 50 years of experience in manufacturing, we have seen the advantages of cold heading/cold forming many times over. These advantages lead to a reduced cost and a reduced lead time.
Cold heading/cold forming is the process of taking a predetermined diameter of wire, cutting it off, and then ramming it between a die and a punch. The number of dies and punches required will be determined by the complexity of the part.
The net or near shapes achieved by cold heading/cold forming can greatly reduce the amount of scrap and waste as compared to the conventional screw machining process where material is actually removed. Because there is a consistent grain flow in the material combined with work hardening in the cold heading/cold forming process, the part is actually stronger. All of this can be achieved at high production rates with a lower tooling cost investment and consistent quality levels.
Our principal account, Specialty Screw Corporation, can actually take the process a step further by the use of our extensive secondary capabilities.
Drilling, tapping, shaving, pointing, and roll threading are all processes that we can perform at high production rates. Combining our processes with those of our dependable subcontractors for heat treating and plating gives you the advantages of one stop shopping.
For precision parts requiring tighter tolerances, we have expanded our network to include manufacturing on CNC swiss screw machines.
